Hello Scary Guy,

How are you?  We are doing extremely good.  We wish you could come to our school again so more people would change.  We would like you to be our teacher and teach us how to treat people and animals with respect.  We think that you are a person who was sent to teach the world about kindness.  Could you please teach us more about bullying?  If you come again we think people will change even more.

Some people changed in our school.  Some students stopped bullying.  All grades are being nice.  We treat others with respect now.  We respect friends and teachers.  Kids are helping each other join in fun activities.  Students are helping students when they need help

We thank you for trying to help everyone else in our school to be a better person.  Before you came some people were getting bullied and when you came you taught them how to be nice.  Our parents wish that they could see you on your next visit.

A MESSAGE FROM SEAN . . . ROCK ON SEAN!!!

Scary,

I must say at the opening of your lecture, I was intimidated, somewhat scared, and anxious to hear what you had to say. As you walked into the room, there was dead silence as if disbelief took hold of the room, even though we all knew prior as to what you would look like with the tatoos and rough exterior. However, as the lecture progressed, I started to relax and become comfortable. You truly stand for the expression “never judge a book by it’s cover”. You truly are one of the most genuine people I have ever heard and your personality is both contagious and inspirational. I have reached out to thank you, Scary. I have never been more inspired in my life. Not to say I was a bad person to begin with, but to stop all the prejudgments I have towards people before I even know their name. If I had a nickel for everytime I saw a fat guy and turned towards my friend and made a remark, I’d probably have a good amount of money. Every person carries a unique story and each should be looked at as such, not all categorized in derogatory stereotypes people make in order to boost their own self-esteem as you have mentioned in your lecture at Rider University this past Monday.

I would be lieing if I said this 7 day challenge was easy, because it certainly is not, but I am working on it. Society is becoming more and more cruel with each new generation. Best friends calling each other names in “kidding” fashion and women becoming more and more used as objects for people’s sexual enjoyment. I can’t help the world as you say, but I am starting to save mine. I want my mind to become pure and full of love. With your inspirational words and accomplishments, I believe it can be done. Good luck on your quest to lecture those fortunate enough to hear your words and for future successes coming your way. Thank you for taking the time to share your experiences and revelations and for opening the eyes of many.

EMILY, A MOTHER SPEAKS OUT

Dear Scary,

I meet with you this morning with Angus Duncan. Thank you so much for your precious time. I feel Angus really took in the words that you said and I hope will start to use them in his life. After we left you, he said how amazing the time spent with you was and that he now “holds the key”!

This is extremely amazing timing that reminds me that everything happens for a reason. He was excluded from school yesterday for is anger and dealing with it in a volatile way with an adult. When he was at home he spent the day doing numerous chores and during his lunch break we had a huge heart to heart about the source of his anger. I have known for a while it has been down to the absence and neglect from his dad. He told me he felt responsible for his dad being missing out of his life for a long time. He even felt that his father’s alcoholism and bad priorities were due to him being born. I spoke to him and told him the truth about what had happened in his lifetime and none of it was his fault. His father unfortunately has given him so much responsibility for his father and the way he behaves.

His father and I have always had a great relationship as he calls me his sole mate. It has been so sad to watch him drink his life away and watch Angus grow up with out his dad that he loves so much. I really feel the message you gave him this morning and the key has backed up this realisation for him in a positive self-empowering way. So thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for your time shared!

I am constantly in awe of how much you give to the world, and each and every person’s life that you touch. I feel you are an amazing role model to the likes of children like Angus. Boys so need a strong stable intuitive male example in their lives. You came into Angus’s life at a pinnacle point. As always, timing is the essence. Thank you so much for all you do. Every meeting with you leaves me looking at my own life and how I “make” people feel and how they “make” me feel. Your concept of possessing a key will enrich my life and processing skills. Something I think I as a person and a parent have been searching for.

As one important favour is given I feel one should be given back. If there is anything in my capacity as a parent or a person living in my community you feel I can do to help your message to be passed on PLEASE say! I have already started to talk about the parent sessions we spoke about to other parents and I am putting together a list of people who might be interested together. Sorry for the long email as I know you are a very busy guy. I just needed to say thank you for what you do! So thank you!!!!! I wish you good health and safe travels on all your journeys.

A LETTER FROM ROBYN

I recently joined a group facebook page about Tucson and our memories thereof. The Scary Guy came up as a memory, and I thought you’d want to know.

I remember being with my young son, probably 6 or 7 at the time and going into the restaurant connected to The Gaslight Theater and seeing The Scary Guy sitting there. My son asked me about him and all I knew about him at the time was that he actually changed his name legally to The Scary Guy and it was because of how he looked. But, not to judge him.

I am so pleasantly surprised to read up on the Scary Guy and see how he is helping communities with acceptance, and bullying and I\\\’m so proud of him. I have three kids who all have been bullied in their schools, and probably were participants as well, unfortunately, and I wish our schools, communities had more Scary Guy’s to teach our young as it now goes into the media age of computers and smartphones.

I never knew all the great work The Scary Guy has been doing, and feel proud he was part of our Tucson community and memories.

Hey, Scary!

Today I finally want to thank you for the inspiration you have been for me during the last years. I saw you first on the French-German-TV-Channel quite some time ago – and to be honest I was impressed, but forgot your message too soon. Nevertheless every now and then it came back to me, when my job at a University in Germany as a research assistant became too much for me, because some students were aggressive and offending me. I wasn’t so sure if I really liked the compliment “Among your enemies you’re having a good name”, because I never wanted to be hated or give others the impression that I despised them. But obviously somehow it went that way.

One night I when I was really desperate and couldn’t sleep because of all the anger I felt, I was watching your videos on youtube and when I listened again to you telling about that offending ad in the newspaper that made you reflect your life and your attitude that was the point when I finally wanted to turn around my direction as well, because I realized it was wrong. So I quit my job and in September this year I am leaving for Canada for several months, for a complete re-start, for doing something I love, for learning more about myself and to change my attitude to myself and to other people. Because for a long time I took up all the negative energy my boss, my students, colleagues and so on gave to me and I kept it inside – and in the end it made me seriously sick. At that point I remembered you and your message I heard a couple of years ago and that was the night I sat in front of the computer for several hours, watching your youtube-videos and I said to myself “Yes, that’s the right way. You have to create love to replace hate”.

Just wanted to tell you about having this impact on me and on my life. You are an amazing and precious man, thank you for sharing your message! I love you. Facebook says you already have too many friends (can anyone have too many friends?), so you can’t ad me – but I hope you get this message.

A LETTER FROM AMANDA PRICE

Dear Scary Guy,
My name is Amanda and I work for a program called Upward Bound, which is a college prep program for high school students. Upward Bound includes about sixty-five high school students and about twelve adults.
I’m not sure if you are aware of the goings on in Oklahoma, but two months ago, an 11-year-old boy named Ty Smalley took his own life because he was bullied so much at school. Mark Brennaman has been working with the Smalley family since the loss of their son. He came and spoke to the program yesterday afternoon where he showed us a video of you on Youtube.com. I was fascinated to say the least. I was inspired, as were many of the students. After we watched your video, one of the students suggested that we take on the “Seven Day; Seven Night Challenge.” We started this morning at 7 a.m. and so far the students have embraced the Challenge incredibly.
At Upward Bound, we have started our own program called Stand For The Silent. The students have organized this entire thing on their own. They came up with pledge cards to stop bullying in schools. There is a driver who busses students to the program who coined a phrase for us. “I Am Somebody.” The students decided that when you pledge and get a pledge card, you would also get a bracelet that says “I Am Somebody.” and on the back of the bracelet would be the initials of the boy, Ty Smalley.
You have been such an inspiration to our effort and I just wanted to tell you that the work you have been doing for the past seven years is absolutely incredible. I want to thank you for your message. I know this program, and myself, has greatly benefitted in just one day.
